Test Your Thread Knowledge – Quiz Answers

I hope you’ve been paying attention!  The past few months we’ve been “back to the basics” talking about threads and taps.  Now it’s time for the quiz.

Just a short quiz – no sweat!

1.  A thread has 3 important diameters, what are they?

Major, Minor and Pitch diameter.

2.  Which of these is the most important diameter?

Pitch Diameter.

3.  Explain why you made that choice.

Because the Internal and External Threads contact at the Pitch diameter.

4.  What is the difference between the pitch and TPI?

TPI is the number of Threads in an Inch and the Pitch is the distance from Thread to Thread.

5.  Taps are identified by the length of the tap chamfer.

Name the three types of taps.

Bottoming, plug and taper

6.  How do you calculate the length of the tap chamer?

Multiply the tap constant by the thread pitch.

7.  How do you determine the feed rate for a tap?

Feed rate equals the pitch.

8.  What is special about a UNJ style thread?

This Thread has a Root Controlled Radius.

9.  Why would we select a high spiral, turbo tap?

When tapping a blind hole.

10.  What is meant by a compound plunge angle?

A modified plunge angle used when single point threading insert is programmed to approach the part at a certain angled approach.

11.  What is the angle of a National Pipe Taper thread in degrees, minutes and seconds?

1 Degree 47 minutes 17 seconds

12.  What does the term Full Form Threading Insert mean?

An insert shape designed to cut a specific Thread Form including the Crest and Root Radius.

13.  A tap can be described as a 3/8 – 16 GH3 tap. What exactly does the GH3 mean?

The pitch diameter of the Tap is 0.0015 obove nominal.

14.  What is the difference between a 3/4 – 10 UNF 2A and a 3/4 – 10 UNF 2B thread?

2A indicates an external thread and 2B indicates an internal thread.

15.  Are these two threads the same size?

No

16.  Explain your answer.

The Internal Class 2B thread must be larger for the class 2A thread to assemble

17.  ANPT stands for Aeronoutical National Pipe Tape.  How does this thread differ to a NPT type?

The ANFT is produced to 1/2 of the Tolerances.

18. What does the term NPTF stand for?

National Pipe Taper Fuel.

19.  Given a M12 x 1.75 - 6H thread, what is the pitch in inches?

0.06889”

20. What does the term 6H mean?

This is the tolerance Class for an Internal Thread.
